The page appears, the thumbnail appears, and then the spinner turns forever. A YouTube video not loading while the rest of the web behaves is almost never a problem with YouTube itself — if it were, you would not be alone and the outage would be obvious. It is usually something local sitting between the player and the video stream. These eight checks find it, quickest first.

Narrow it down in thirty seconds
| Test | If it works there | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Incognito window | An extension is interfering | Fix 1 |
| Another browser | Chrome profile or cache | Fixes 2–3 |
| Phone on mobile data | Your network or DNS | Fixes 4–5 |
| Lower quality plays fine | Bandwidth, not a fault | Fix 6 |
| Nothing works anywhere | Hardware acceleration or drivers | Fixes 7–8 |
Fix 1: rule out your extensions
Open the same video in an incognito window, where extensions are off by default. If it plays, the cause is in your extension list — ad blockers, player skins, download helpers and privacy tools all rewrite parts of the YouTube page. Re-enable them one at a time until the spinner returns. Our list of free YouTube extensions notes which categories touch the player most.
Fixes 2 and 3: cache and profile
Clear cached images and files for the last day, then reload with Ctrl+Shift+R rather than a normal refresh. If that changes nothing, create a second Chrome profile from the avatar menu and open the video there with nothing installed. A clean profile that plays normally tells you the fault is in your main profile’s data, which is worth knowing before you reinstall the browser.
Fixes 4 and 5: network and DNS
Switch your phone to mobile data and try the same video. Playing there but not on the home connection points at the network rather than the device. Two common culprits: a DNS service that resolves YouTube’s media servers badly, and a VPN or proxy routing video traffic the long way round. Turn the VPN off for one test — if the spinner stops, see our guide to fixing a slow VPN before blaming YouTube.
Fix 6: check what the connection can actually carry
If 360p plays and 1080p stalls, nothing is broken — the line cannot keep up. YouTube publishes the bandwidth each resolution needs in its system requirements, and 4K asks for considerably more than most home connections deliver while other devices are busy. Set the quality manually in the player and the stalling stops.
Fixes 7 and 8: when a YouTube video not loading is graphics
A black player with sound, or a spinner on every video in every browser, often comes down to hardware acceleration. Turn it off in Chrome’s system settings, restart the browser and test once. If that fixes it, the real answer is a graphics driver update rather than leaving acceleration off permanently — it is doing useful work the rest of the time.
- Update Chrome at chrome://settings/help and restart it properly.
- Update the graphics driver from the manufacturer, not from a driver-bundle site.
- Check chrome://gpu for video decoding entries reported as unavailable.
One video or all of them?
This single question saves most of the work above, and people skip it. If every video stalls, the cause is on your side and the eight checks apply. If one specific video refuses while others play, it is almost certainly not your setup: the upload may still be processing its higher resolutions, it may be age-restricted and waiting on a sign-in, or it may be blocked in your country by the uploader.
Open the same video in a private window while signed out. A video that plays signed out but not signed in points at your account — a restriction setting or a parental control rather than a network fault. Neither of those is fixed by clearing a cache.
Why does the video load but the page stays blank?
That pattern — audio running, layout missing — is usually an extension rewriting the interface rather than a streaming problem. It is the same category of fault as picture-in-picture breaking, and the same test applies: try it with extensions off.
Does clearing cookies help?
Occasionally, and it costs you being signed in. Try it after the cache, not before. If clearing cookies fixes playback repeatedly, something is corrupting the session — a profile rebuild is more durable than clearing them every week.
Work down the table and most cases resolve in the first two checks. When a YouTube video not loading survives all eight, the remaining suspects are the network path and the graphics stack — and both of those show the same symptom on sites other than YouTube, which is the quickest way to confirm it.
