Most browsers need an extension for a VPN, but the Opera browser VPN is built in. It is free, needs no account and has no data limit, which makes it one of the easiest ways to change your location while browsing. Older guides talk about installing an Opera VPN extension in Chrome; that extension is no longer available, and the built-in feature in Opera itself is what Opera offers today. How to turn on the free VPN in Opera
- Download Opera from opera.com for Windows, Mac, Linux or Android.
- Open Settings (Alt+P on Windows) and go to Privacy & security.
- Switch on Enable VPN. A blue VPN badge appears at the left of the address bar.
- Click the badge to turn the VPN on or off and to choose a region.
What the free VPN covers
- Traffic from the Opera browser only; other apps on your device use your normal connection.
- A choice of broad regions, such as the Americas, Europe and Asia, rather than specific countries.
- No sign-in, no subscription and no monthly data cap.
Technically the free feature works as an encrypted browser proxy. It is good for hiding your location from websites and for adding a layer of protection on public Wi-Fi in the browser, but it does not protect games, email apps or anything outside Opera.

Can I use Opera’s VPN in Chrome?
No. The free VPN is part of the Opera browser and there is no current Opera VPN extension for Chrome. You can go the other way, though: Opera can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, so you can keep your favourite Chrome extensions and use Opera’s VPN at the same time. Why is the Opera VPN not connecting?
- Some networks, for example at schools and offices, block it; try another network to check.
- Other VPN or proxy software on your computer can conflict with it; pause it while testing.
- Update Opera to the latest version from its menu.
- Switch to a different region in the VPN badge menu; one region may be busy.

Opera says the free VPN does not log your browsing and encrypts the connection. As with any free service, avoid using it for highly sensitive work, and read Opera’s privacy statement.
Does it work for streaming?
Sometimes, but because you choose a region rather than a country, it is not designed for reaching a particular country’s catalogue.
Is the VPN available in Opera GX and on iPhone?
Opera GX includes the same free VPN. On iPhone, availability differs from the desktop and Android versions, so check the App Store listing.
If you want a VPN without installing anything extra, the Opera browser VPN is the simplest option available: switch it on in settings and it is ready. Just remember that it covers only the browser, and upgrade or choose a full VPN when you need your whole device protected.
