Microsoft Copilot, the AI assistant that replaced Bing Chat in late 2023, is built into Microsoft Edge. You do not have to switch browsers to use it, though. There are three simple ways to use Copilot in Chrome: on the Copilot website, as an app installed from Chrome, or in a side panel through an extension. This guide compares them and shows how to set each one up.
Is there an official Copilot extension for Chrome?
Not for the consumer version of Copilot. Microsoft had announced a Microsoft 365 Copilot extension for Chrome, but later took it off its roadmap. The Copilot extensions you find on the Chrome Web Store come from independent developers. The good ones simply open Microsoft’s own Copilot website, so your chats stay with your Microsoft account.

1. Use the Copilot website
Open copilot.microsoft.com in Chrome. You can start chatting right away; signing in with a Microsoft account keeps your conversation history. Bookmark the page or pin the tab so it is always one click away.
2. Install Copilot as an app
- Open copilot.microsoft.com in Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu, then Cast, save and share > Install page as app.
- Confirm the name. Copilot now opens in its own window and can be pinned to the taskbar.
3. Open Copilot in a side panel with an extension
An extension lets you keep Copilot open beside the article, email or code you are working on. It has about 8,000 users on the Chrome Web Store, and its developer states that it does not collect or use your data.
- Install the extension and pin it from the puzzle-piece menu.

- Sign in to Copilot inside the panel if you want your history saved.
How to spot a risky AI extension
AI extensions are a popular disguise for data theft. In January 2026 researchers found two Chrome extensions, with more than 900,000 users between them, that were copying people’s AI chats. Before you install any Copilot or ChatGPT add-on, check who publishes it, whether it asks to read all your web pages, and whether its reviews mention strange behaviour.

Is Copilot free to use in Chrome?
Yes, the consumer version of Copilot has a free tier on the website. Microsoft also sells paid plans with more features.
Is Bing Chat the same as Copilot?
Yes. Microsoft renamed Bing Chat to Copilot in November 2023. Old bing.com/chat links now lead to Copilot.
Does Copilot in Chrome see the page I am reading?
Not automatically. In Edge, Copilot can use the open page as context if you allow it. In Chrome, paste the text or link you want it to work with.
